Most outdoor kitchens cost between $6,269 and $27,087, with a national average of about $16,533, according to HomeAdvisor. LawnLove's figures run from about $2,880 at the low end, using a basic prefab frame, to over $40,000 for a top-of-the-line build. The biggest swings come from size, appliances and how far utilities have to run.
Typical outdoor kitchen costs
HomeAdvisor prices outdoor kitchens at about $33–$130 per square foot of kitchen area.

Source: HomeAdvisor's size table, which applies its $33–$130 per square foot rate. Labor typically makes up 20%–40% of the budget, and prices vary by region.
LawnLove puts the typical project a bit lower, at $5,060–$17,280 with an average of $13,180. The two guides measure slightly different things, so use them as a range, not a quote.
Prefab vs. custom
The island structure itself is usually priced per linear foot of counter. LawnLove lists custom-built frames at $320–$670 per linear foot and prefab frames at $250–$475, with most homeowners paying about $365 per linear foot for prefab. A prefab or modular island is the budget route; a custom masonry island lets you pick the exact layout and finish.
What drives the price
Appliances and countertops are where most budgets grow. Here are HomeAdvisor's typical ranges.

If you don't have a patio yet, budget for one. See our paver patio cost guide, and if you're weighing surfaces, deck vs. patio. Concrete Network notes that heavy features like masonry fireplaces and pizza ovens are better suited to patios, since decks have load limits. A roof or pergola adds shade and lets you cook in light rain.
Utilities and permits
Gas, water and power are what turn a grill station into a kitchen, and they're often quoted separately. Ask whether each bid includes them.
- Gas. HomeAdvisor's fire pit guide puts running a natural gas line at $15–$25 per linear foot. Its outdoor kitchen guide lists gas plumbers at about $45–$200 an hour. Gas line work should be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter with a permit.
- Electric. HomeAdvisor's outdoor kitchen guide puts electricians at about $50–$150 an hour. Outdoor receptacles at a home must be GFCI-protected under the National Electrical Code, as EC&M explains. New circuits are a job for a licensed electrician.
- Water and drains. A sink means a supply line and a drain. LawnLove notes that building close to the house lets you share existing lines and cut labor costs.
- Permits. HomeAdvisor puts total permit costs at $250–$2,000, with individual permits at $50–$500 each.
- HOA approval. If you have an HOA, check its rules on structures, roofs and fire features, and get approval in writing before you order materials.
Trenching for gas, water or electrical lines is digging. Contact 811 a few business days before work starts. It's free, and buried utilities get marked first.
Fire pit costs: gas vs. wood
Many outdoor kitchens include a fire feature. HomeAdvisor puts the average fire pit at about $850, with most between $200 and $3,000.
|
Fire pit type |
Typical cost |
|---|---|
|
Wood-burning |
$300–$1,000 |
|
Propane |
$300–$950 |
|
Natural gas |
$400–$3,000 |
|
Portable |
$75–$500 |
|
In-ground, built |
$1,000–$3,000 |
Wood gives you crackle and smell but also smoke. The EPA says people with heart or lung disease, older adults and kids can be particularly sensitive to wood smoke. It recommends burning only seasoned, dry wood and skipping fires on air quality alert days. It also notes that switching to natural gas or propane reduces harmful air pollutants. Rules on backyard fires vary by city and county, so check with your local fire department before you build a wood pit.
Gas fire pits and fireplaces are not a DIY hookup. Have a licensed gas professional install the line and connection, and pull the permit your area requires.
Safety and placement
The National Fire Protection Association says to place a grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep kids and pets at least 3 feet from the grilling area.
NFPA's figures, based on 2020–2024 annual averages, show why placement matters:
- Nearly one-quarter of grill structure fires started on an exterior balcony or open porch.
- Gas grills were involved in an average of 9,235 home fires a year.
For a built-in kitchen, think about layout early. Consider where smoke drifts, how far the grill sits from siding and windows, and how smoke and heat will escape if there's a roof overhead. Follow the clearances in your grill and fire feature installation manuals.
Climate and regional differences
In warm regions like the South, Southwest and much of California, an outdoor kitchen can be used most of the year, so shade matters more. In freezing climates, plan for winter shutdown and put shutoff valves and drains where you can reach them. Appliance maker Kalamazoo gives these winter steps:
- Drain all water from supply lines and faucets before winter.
- Winterize ice makers before outdoor temperatures drop below 45°F.
- Take action on outdoor refrigerators once daily lows reach 38°F.
When to call a pro
A freestanding grill cart on an existing patio is easy. A built-in kitchen usually involves several trades: a hardscaper or builder for the island and patio, a licensed plumber or gas fitter, and a licensed electrician.
When you hire:
- Get 2–3 written quotes for the same layout, appliance list and utility scope.
- Ask for photos of outdoor kitchens the company has built.
- Check licensing and insurance where your state requires it, especially for gas and electrical work.
- Get the scope, who pulls each permit and the payment schedule in writing.
